SUMMARY:Come join us for an in-person ID meeting this Monday January 6
DESCRIPTION:Our next ID meeting will take place on Monday January 6th from 6.30 to 8.30 at Ethan Crenson’s house. Attendees can of course arrive later and leave earlier. \nYou are welcome to bring whatever mushrooms and other fungi you have found recently. Since winter weather is upon us and big mushrooms are scarce\, Monday will also be a great opportunity to brush up your microscopy skills. Monday’s session will be equipped with both dissecting and compound scopes. You can practice making slide mounts with chemical stains. It might even be possible to get some practical experience with spore measurement under the microscope. \nThe address is: \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n \nBrooklyn\, NY 11215 \nThe nearest subway is the 4th Avenue/9th St station on the F\, R and G lines. \nThere will be microscopes and lots of mushroom books. In person ID meetings are a great way of developing your hands-on identification skills and dipping your toes into microscopy! \nPlease bring any interesting specimens regardless of whether you have identified them or not\, and check out what others have found. \nWe continue to encourage members to use iNaturalist – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you on Monday!

SUMMARY:Join us for a kosher vegetarian Chinese mid-winter feast!
DESCRIPTION:The mushroom season is done\, but we still must look for them wherever we can! And we are in the middle of holidays\, so time to gather and enjoy the occasions. \nThere are two Kosher Chinese Vegetarian restaurants in Chinatown that have had an ongoing rivalry for being THE original Buddha Bodai for quite some time now\, and here is your chance to try the 77 Mulberry place (https://www.veganbodhi.com)\, just to change things up. Everything is vegetarian there\, most dishes are vegan\, but you will not be missing meat products at all. The costs per person should be somewhere around $30-35 (inflation!) including tips. \nThe place does not serve alcohol\, but feel free to bring wine or beer if you want: since the place is certified kashrut\, they ask for the outside drinks to be kosher too. \nI will try to order a variety of dishes similar to the selections we tried in the past\, supply chain issues allowing\, of course\, and try a new dish or two. And please bring CASH as it is by far the easiest way to pay in the end. \nI made the reservations on both dates for their two biggest tables\, so we can aim for 22 people per event\, starting at 6pm. Thus\, we are rather limited by space\, and if you are interested in attending\, please send me an e-mail with your preferred date in January of 2025 (Thursday 9th and Tuesday 21st) at nymsactivities@gmail.com to reserve a spot for you. The first reservations get the spots\, so do not dawdle if you want to come! \nIf later you discover that you cannot come\, please let me know if case there is anyone on the waiting list so we can fill your spot. Please let me know if you have any questions\, and hope to see you soon\, at one of the two dinners in January of the upcoming year. \n\nMy cell phone # is 206-369-0497\, just in case. \n-Roman Kosoy

SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, Alley Pond Park\, Queens\, Saturday\, January 11th
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Alley Pond Park\, Queens this Saturday\, January 11th. \nTemperatures have been\, for the most part\, below freezing and there is snow on the ground. But did you know that certain fungi produce compounds (for instance trehalose) that act like antifreeze in cold weather? \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. Dress for the weather (quite cold). The NYMS is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk. Please monitor your email in case we do. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you Saturday!
