SUMMARY:Come join us for an online ID meeting this Monday\, December 9
DESCRIPTION:Next Monday’s ID meeting will be happening online. \nCome share what you’ve found\, see what others have found or to ask more general questions about anything fungi-related. \nAs always\, we encourage you to use iNaturalist to share your observations – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City\n\nIf you’re not using iNaturalist\, try to have images on your computer that you can share. \nEither way\, it’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing details of cap\, underside and stem\, and to note the habitat \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Thank you for joining our 2nd NYMS Holiday Party\, Tues. 12/10/2024!
DESCRIPTION:Update: \nThanks to the 50 members who braved the rain and ventured out to the wilds of Ridgewood on 12/10/2024 to create a festive and convivial evening.  We raised a toast to fungi and fermentation and indulged in delicious mushroom dishes.  Nineteen folks exchanged fun mushroomy Secret Santa / Siberian Shaman surprises.  Ten lucky raffle winners took home bottles of Irina Adam’s Phoenix Botanicals new Black Trumpet Mushroom perfume (partnered with Scott Bluedorn’s art).  Cheers to all our beloved members for making 2024 such a wonderful year of mycological discovery\, cultural collaborations\, and community building! \n  \n———————————————————————————————— \nDear NYMS members and friends\, \nGet a respite from the doom and gloom of recent political events and join us for our 2nd NYMS Holiday Party on Tuesday 12/10\, 6:30-8:30pm at the fabulous nano-brewery\, Evil Twin!  Let’s gather ’round our beloved members\, new and old\, once again to raise a toast to fungi and fermentation!  We will meet at 1616 George St\, Ridgewood Queens (do not go to their DUMBO location)\, just one block from the Halsey L stop (know before you go – check the MTA for service changes). \n\n\nBring cash to simplify your bar tab as well as a mushroom-y gift for under $10 if you would like to participate in Secret Santa/Siberian Shaman! \nThe bar is kindly waiving their customary booking fee but is requesting we pay at least 20% gratuity on our drinks. So be prepared to tip generously and plan out your party pennies accordingly. Don’t start out the new year with bad bar karma. \nEvil Twin also has wine and cocktails but does not serve food so this is also a potluck – we invite you to BYOM(ushroom) dish – sweet or savory. There will also be food trucks just outside. \n* BONUS * From 6:30-7pm in the back room\, we will be having a very special introduction of an exquisite new perfume\, custom-crafted with Black Trumpet mushrooms (Craterellus cornucopioides) by member and myco-perfumer Irina Adam in collaboration with member artist Scott Bluedorn.  Don’t miss your chance to raffle 6:30-7 to win a bottle of this one-of-a-kind new scent and other mushroom-y (sur)prizes! \nNYMS custom-designed tshirts will also be available for purchase at the party. Great gift idea for your mycophile friends and family members — grab one before they sell out! \nFamily are welcome!  You must RSVP here to confirm your spot. Email Maya Han at culture@newyorkmyc.org if any questions.

SUMMARY:Learn how to grow mushrooms at Biotech without Borders!
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve been interested in learning how to grow mushrooms\, here is your opportunity to learn. NYMS partner Biotech without Borders has recently launched a workshop series on how to grow mushrooms via their Indoor Culinary Mushroom Cultivation Series. It’s an a la carte series which can be taken as one-offs to build a specific skill or all together to grow mushrooms start to finish. \n\n\nNovember 20 – Starter Culture\nNovember 26 – Culture Expansion\nDecember 4 – Fruiting Methods\nDecember 11 – Substrate Formulation & Inoculation\n\nThe Biotech Without Borders Myco Lab.\nThe BWB community biology lab has recently expanded\, tripling our available bench space for lab work. They’ve dedicated an entire section of the lab specifically for mycological research\, fully equipped with everything needed for mushroom cultivation\, myco-material experimentation\, and DNA barcoding of fungi. Our goal is to offer affordable lab access for everyone—ideal for beginners eager to develop mycological skills or even for early-stage startups needing space to launch their bio-designed products. Please visit https://biotechwithoutborders.org/ for more info on becoming a member.

SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, Prospect Park\, Brooklyn\, Saturday\, December 14th - NOTE-Alternate Location/Early Start
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Prospect Park\, Brooklyn this Saturday\, December 14th! Please note that we are meeting earlier than usual and at a different location than the usual one. \nRain and recent mild weather means we should find ample ascos\, jellies\, slime molds crusts and maybe even some gilled mushrooms. Bring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. Dress for the weather (which will not be as mild). \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you Saturday!
