SUMMARY:Non-NYMS Event: Curious Allies: Mutualism in Fungi\, Parasites\, and Carnivores
DESCRIPTION:One of New York Mycological Society’s very own members\, Katy Wang (katywangstudio.com) has some of their original art work featured in the fifth New York Botanical Garden triennial\, which starts on May 18th and runs up and through October 27th. \nCurious Allies: Mutualism in Fungi\, Parasites and Carnivores\, will open at the New York Botanical Garden on May 18\, alongside the garden-wide exhibition Wonderland: Curious Nature. Artworks have been selected for this Fifth Triennial by a jury team of Joanna Groarke\, Robin Jess\, Patricia Jonas\, and Susan Mintun. Chosen are 48 artworks from artists in the US\, Brazil\, Canada\, India\, Indonesia\, Ireland\, Japan\, South Africa\, and the UK. The artworks included illustrate various elements of the theme\, examining important and often unobserved relationships fungi\, lichens\, mycotrophic\, parasitic\, and carnivorous plants have with other plants and animals. Mushrooms and fungi serve as decomposers\, form networks between plants\, and can clean up environmental toxins. Lichens are themselves relationships between fungi and a chlorophyll-containing bacteria or algae. Parasitic plants attach directly to a host and draw nutrients from the host\, sometimes harming the host. And carnivorous plants supplement nutrients from soil and water with a diet of insects\, consuming them for additional nutrients. \nAll of these organisms develop relationships that are critical to functioning ecosystems\, but many times their impact is not fully appreciated. This exhibition hopes to shine a light on the many environmental benefits derived from these mutualistic relationships and new discoveries being made about their impacts. \nArtists with work included are: Susan Benjamin\, Margaret Best\, Jessica Daigle\, Rebecca Davies\, Maria Alice deRezende\, Ronda Dick\, Shevaun Doherty\, Jean Emmons\, Akiko Enokido\, Christiane Fashek\, Lara Gastinger\, Janet Goltz\, Prerna Gupta\, Yoko Harada\, Erika Hargesheimer\, Albina P. Herron\, Asuka Hishiki\, Ann Hoffenberg\, Mariko Ikeda\, Mieko Ishikawa\, Karen Kluglein\, Patricia Luppino\, Lucy Martin\, Tammy S. McEntee\, Sarah Morrish\, Eunike Nugroho\, Barbara Oozeerally\, Nina Petrochko\, Sengmany Phommachakr\, Linda Powers\, Theresa Ream\, Gillian Rice\, Betsy Rogers-Knox\, Daleen Roodt\, Elaine Searle\, Beverly Simone\, Kim Spink\, Jane Sturgeon\, Rose Torres\, Donnett Vanek\, Janene Walkky\, Yuan Yuan Wang\, Carol Woodin\, and Fatima Zagonel.\nIn I have two paintings in the show. The show is located in Ross Gallery\, which is located on the side entrance of the Mertz Library building.

SUMMARY:Learn how to do fungal DNA sequencing October 13!
DESCRIPTION:NYMS member Sally Kong is running another one of our ever popular DNA barcoding workshops where participants will learn how to extract fungal DNA\, amplify it\, perform gel electrophoresis and learn about how to interpret a sequence. \nSally is a software engineer\, artist\, and hobby biologist based in Brooklyn\, New York. For the past six years she’s built software for feature animation and games. Outside of work\, she spends most of her time at the community biology lab Genspace and is currently the lead of the community project Microbial Reef\, exploring the impact of oyster reefs on microbial communities and the biogeochemical cycling in local waterways. \nRecently\, in collaboration with NYMS she led the Roots of Renewal internship program teaching science\, art\, and sustainability practices to AAPI youth in Sunset Park through the lens of mycelium. \nShe’s excited to welcome other members to her home for the barcoding workshop! \nThe 3 hour workshop will take place on Sunday October 13 at 3pm in Red Hook Brooklyn. \nCost is $10 to cover pipette tips\, tubes\, reagents and Sanger sequencing. \nThis is a hands-on workshops so attendance is very limited. No prior knowledge is required. \nIf you are interested please email president@newyorkmyc.org with a short description of why you are interested in doing this workshop.

SUMMARY:Please join us for an in-person lecture on mushroom photography by acclaimed mushroom photographer Alison Pollack!
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a very special in-person lecture at the Central Park Arsenal on Thursday September 26 at 6.30pm! \nAlison Pollack presents From Macro to Micro: The Art of Mushroom Photography \nAlison Pollack\, one of the world’s best mushroom photographers\, will describe her process for creating beautiful photos of mushrooms and Myxomycetes (slime molds).  She will describe her techniques for field work\, as well as studio photography using extreme macro lenses and microscope objectives adapted to her camera.  She will share some of her photographs of mushrooms and slime molds from her home in Northern California\, as well as from her travels around the world.  Alison’s favorite photography subjects are tiny fungi and myxos\, some so small that you would not see them as you walk through the forest.  She will describe how she finds these tiny organisms\, most only one or two millimeters tall\, and how she photographs them. She will discuss all of the gear she uses\, as well as some of her methods for shooting and photo editing. \nBring your photo and myxo-related questions for the Q+A! This lecture will appeal to anyone captivated by the beauty of fungi and slime molds\, and to anyone seeking to improve their photography of these magical organisms. \nAlison will also join us for the Saturday September 28th walk to the South Mountain Reservation.  There you can watch her process in the field and get some tips on mushroom photography. \n  \nLocation \nWe’re back at the Central Park Arsenal – a beautiful building in Central Park with a welcoming team where we used to hold all our lectures. It has not been available to us because of its COVID-related closure but is now back open. It’s located at 830 5th Ave\, New York\, NY 10065\, at the level of 64th Street on the East side of the park. It’s a short walk from the 5th Avenue and 59th Street N\, R and W station or the 4\, 5 and 6 train station at 59th Street. You can also easily get there by the N\, Q\, R and F trains at 63rd Street station. \nAbout Alison Pollack \nAlison Pollack is a macro and extreme macro photographer specializing in mushrooms and Myxomycetes (slime molds). Her passion is finding and photographing these beautiful organisms\, especially the smaller ones\, to bring awareness to the beauty that exists right at our feet as we walk through the forest. Her goal is to reveal these miniature beauties of the forest in a format that is as much art as science. Alison shares her photographs online where she has amassed a large and enthusiastic following from around the world. Her otherworldly images are captioned with information about her subjects\, as well as technical details of her photography process. Alison’s photographs have been featured in dozens of print and online publications\, including National Geographic\, the Sunday New York Times\, Der Spiegel\, and Science Weekly.  For the past four years she has entered and has been awarded prizes in the prestigious Nikon Small World photography competition. \n \n You can see Alison’s photographs online on her social media accounts: \n   Instagram: @marin_mushrooms \n   Facebook: @AlisonKPollack

SUMMARY:South Mountain Reservation\, Millburn\, NJ on Saturday\, September 28th
DESCRIPTION:Please prepare appropriately. And as always\, if the forecast changes for the very bad\, we might shift the walk to a different day or cancel it. As of the week of this walk\, it looks like there is no significant rain forecast for Saturday. However\, please monitor your email for event scheduling changes. In view of the recent dry weather in the region\, members should anticipate fairly unproductive conditions on the ground. \nGuest lecturer the photographer Alison Pollack will be on this walk looking for tiny ascos and slime molds and is willing to do a demo of her process on the walk. \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nTicks and mosquitos are common in this park so you will want to be prepared for those as well. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you there!
