SUMMARY:Come join us for an online ID meeting this Monday February 26
DESCRIPTION:Next Monday’s week’s ID meeting will be happening online. \nCome share what you’ve found\, see what others have found or to ask more general questions about anything fungi-related. \nWe encourage you to use iNaturalist – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City\n\nIf you’re not using iNaturalist\, try to have images on your computer that you can share. \nEither way\, it’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing details of cap\, underside and stem\, and to note the habitat. When possible\, make a spore print. \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions. \n-Sigrid Jakob\, NYMS \n  \nNYMS online ID Meeting \nMonday February 26\, 6:30 PM \n

SUMMARY:The genus Pluteus in North America: 100 species and counting
DESCRIPTION:We will present an overview of the taxonomy and distribution of the species of Pluteus in North America based on morphological studies and molecular phylogenies. A total of 120 taxa (species and varieties) of Pluteus have been described from or reported in North America\, but currently only c. 40 of these species have been confirmed to occur here\, based on molecular data generated from North American voucher collections. We will discuss the ongoing\, collaborative projects to clarify the status of old names in the genus\, and to describe a good number on new species\, through a combination of morphological and molecular approaches and collaboration with citizen-scientists. \nAlfredo Justo – Curator of Botany & Mycology at the New Brunswick Museum\nDr. Justo joined the Natural History Department of the New Brunswick Museum in June 2019. He oversees the curation and growth of the NBM Herbarium\, which comprises over 100\,000 specimens of plants\, fungi\, lichens\, bryophytes and algae from New Brunswick and neighboring regions. His research focuses on the fungal diversity of New Brunswick & Atlantic Canada\, while maintaining ongoing global taxonomic research on selected genera of mushrooms. \nDr. Justo completed his PhD in systematic mycology at the University of Vigo\, Spain\, in 2006. Following several years of projects in Spain related to mycological conservation and diversity\, he spent six years (2009-2014) in a postdoctoral research position with Dr. David Hibbett at Clark University (Massachusetts\, USA)\, focusing on molecular systematics of mushroom-forming fungi. Research and teaching positions followed\, in Mexico\, Spain\, and eventually back to the USA where Dr. Justo was a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Biology Department at Worcester State University and a Visiting Scholar at Clark University.\nMore on Dr. Justo’s research interests & publications at https://alfredojusto.weebly.com/ \nThis lecture was recorded and is viewable to active members who are logged in. SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, Inwood Hill Park\, Manhattan\, Sunday\, March 3rd
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Inwood Hill Park\, Manhattan this Sunday\, March 3rd! \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box\, water and a lunch. We haven’t been to Inwood since April of last year. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you on Sunday! \nAre there any mushrooms when it’s cold outside?\nWe will not encounter the abundance of fleshy mushrooms that we normally do during the summer and fall. However\, there will be plenty of wood decomposers like jellies\, basidiomycete crusts\, ascomycetes\, and polypores\, in addition to some gilled fungi that prefer the cold weather. \nMembers are encouraged to lead pop-up walks!\nIf you are interested in leading or co-leading a pop-up walk please respond to this email. No taxonomic knowledge is required. The only prerequisite is familiarity with the club’s walk route in a specific park.
