SUMMARY:Come join us for an online ID meeting this Monday starring the Polypores
DESCRIPTION:Next Monday’s ID meeting will be happening online. \nThis time\, the focus will be on the polypores. Polypore expert Tom Bigelow will give brief introduction to the topic and then clear the stage for people to share their polypore observations – unidentified\, unusual\, tentatively identified – for discussion. So come prepared! \nAs always\, we encourage you to use iNaturalist to share your observations – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City\n\nIf you’re not using iNaturalist\, try to have images on your computer that you can share. \nEither way\, it’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing as many details as possible. \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions. \n-Sigrid Jakob\, NYMS

SUMMARY:The NYMS Winter Banquet is back!
DESCRIPTION:The banquet has been a storied part of the club’s past back since the club’s founding in 1962. \nIn fact John Cage himself wrote to the club that “All that is necessary is an annual program of lectures and walks and a banquet.” Our last banquet took place in February 2020\, just before the pandemic closed everything down. Well\, it’s time to bring it back! \nWe are very happy to invite you all to the NYMS winter banquet. This year we are going to explore a newly opened restaurant in Flushing\, with a rather promising name\, Mushroom Hot Pot. And since the Asian New year is this month\, we can welcome it by partaking in some fungal goodness! \nThe Mushroom Hot Pot is located at 36-55 Main Street\, four blocks north (toward Northern boulevard) from the Flushing-Main Street stop on the 7 train (last stop). The restaurant offers a variety of dishes from across China\, primarily focusing on Sichuan dishes\, but the centerpiece is the non-spicy mushroom hotpot from Yunan province. For this dinner the vegan/vegetarian mushroom hot pot contains 4 different mushrooms (some shipped dried from Yunan) with vegetables\, tofu and noodles. Complementing it will be five dishes focused on vegetables (some vegan\, and ranging from medium spicy to spicy)\, and two Sichuan fish dishes with Sichuan peppercorns (so mala spicy!). Thus\, there should be plenty options for vegetarians\, and a good selection of vegan dishes! So please join the fellow club members and learn how various mushrooms are utilized in Sichuan and Yunan dishes! \nThe number of attendees is limited to 108 due to the restaurant’s space\, so do not dilly dally if interested! \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n \nIf you don’t use PayPal or Eventbrite feel free to reach out to me directly at the email below. We want every member to be able to attend! \n-Roman Kosoy \nnymsactivities@gmail.com\nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. SUMMARY:NAMA Webinar: Lessons from Mexico: Humanity\, Ecology and Mushrooms
DESCRIPTION:NAMA Webinar: Feb 20th\, 8 PM Eastern \nPresented by Zachary Hunter \nIn 2023\, NAMA partnered with The Fungivore Mexico Mushroom Adventures for a first-of-its-kind curated deep dive into the parallel world of Mycology in Mexico. Indigenous community members\, mycologists\, chefs\, and professors all convened with the thirty US-based mushroom enthusiasts that attended to bring us up to speed on Mexico\, Community and the Future of Mycology. The resounding response from attendees was a mix of delight\, wonder\, mind-blown awe\, as well as an unshakable new view and understanding of Mexico\, and its important role as we move into an ecologically sound future of Flora Fauna & Funga for North America. This presentation aims to introduce a glimpse into Mexico’s vast store of ecological wisdom and mycological aspirations\, and invite you to join us in August at NAMA_MX24.” \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, Kissena Park\, Queens\, Sunday\, February 25th
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Kissena Park\, Queens this Sunday\, February 25th! \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box\, water and a lunch. We haven’t visited this park since March of last year. We have only visited this park on six previous occasions. It sometimes has some unusual (mostly tiny) fungi\, but sometimes it just doesn’t. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you on Sunday! \nAre there any mushrooms when it’s cold outside?\nWe will not encounter the abundance of fleshy mushrooms that we normally do during the summer and fall. However\, there will be plenty of wood decomposers like jellies\, basidiomycete crusts\, ascomycetes\, and polypores\, in addition to some gilled fungi that prefer the cold weather. (Be sure to ask your walk leader about fungi that make their own antifreeze). \nMembers are encouraged to lead pop-up walks!\nIf you are interested in leading or co-leading a pop-up walk please respond to this email. No taxonomic knowledge is required. The only prerequisite is familiarity with the club’s walk route in a specific park.
