SUMMARY:Come join us for an in-person ID meeting this Monday!
DESCRIPTION:Next Monday’s ID meeting will take place  from 6.30 to 8.30 at Paul and Juniper’s  apartment in Crown Heights\, Brooklyn. \nAttendees can of course arrive later and leave earlier. \nPlease bring any interesting specimens regardless of whether you have identified them or not\, and check out what others have found. \nIn person ID meetings are a great way of developing your hands-on identification skills and dipping your toes into microscopy! \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n \nThere will be microscopes and lots of books. \nWe encourage you to use iNaturalist – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City.\nFungi Beyond New York City.\nSlime Molds of New York City.

SUMMARY:Come join us for our annual business meeting!
DESCRIPTION:Like every winter\, we will be holding a business meeting where we’ll share our plans for the year and debate the hot topics of the day. \nOur business meetings are a lot more fun than they sound; they’re a chance to mix and mingle with other club members over snacks. They are also a great opportunity to find out how to get more involved with the club (newsflash: we need more volunteers!). \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n \n  \nPlease RSVP president@newyorkmyc.org if you are planning to attend so we can make sure there’s enough room for everyone. \nSee you on the 17th! \n-Sigrid Jakob \nPresident\, NYMS

SUMMARY:Myxomycetes at Black Sugarloaf\, northern Tasmania – a slime mo(u)ld hotspot
DESCRIPTION:The taxonomic position of slime moulds has baffled naturalists and scientists for centuries. When “the father of taxonomy” Swedish botanists Carl Linneus devised his system of classification he included slime moulds (and fungi) in the plant kingdom. Slime moulds were subsequently placed in various kingdoms but are now regarded as amoebozoans.\nSarah Lloyd has observed slime moulds in a eucalypt forest at Birralee Tasmania for 13 years. It is now considered a hotspot for myxomycetes\, with over 120 species documented from the site including 4 hitherto undescribed species\, one new genus and more new species awaiting further study. In this webinar Sarah will discuss these and also describe the important ecological roles of slime moulds. \nSarah Lloyd has had a lifelong love of birds\, and since 1988 when she moved to live in a forest at Black Sugarloaf\, Birralee in central north Tasmania\, an interest in plants\, bryophytes\, fungi and slime moulds. She has contributed to several citizen science projects including the Australian Bird Count\, and Fungimap\, a project to record Australia’s undocumented fungal species. It was through Fungimap that Sarah was introduced to slime moulds. In 2019 she was awarded an OAM (Order of Australia medal) for “services to conservation – and slime moulds”. She is author of numerous books\, including Where the Slime Moulds Creep (4th Edition\, 2022).\nThis lecture was recorded and is viewable to active members who are logged in.
