SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, Long Pond Park\, Staten Island\, Sunday\, February 4th
DESCRIPTION:We will be headed to Long Pond Park\, Staten Island this Sunday\, February 4th! The park is more remote than many others we visit in the city\, so please give yourself ample time to get there and make sure you come prepared with proper clothing for the weather and a lunch if you plan on staying the whole duration of the walk. \nIn addition to the recommendations above you should also bring: water\, paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box\, and your acute senses. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you on Sunday! \nAre there any mushrooms when it’s cold outside?\nWe will not encounter the abundance of fleshy mushrooms that we normally do during the summer and fall. However\, there will be plenty of wood decomposers like jellies\, basidiomycete crusts\, ascomycetes\, and polypores\, in addition to some gilled fungi that prefer the cold weather. (Be sure to ask your walk leader about fungi that make their own antifreeze). \nMembers are encouraged to lead pop-up walks!\nIf you are interested in leading or co-leading a pop-up walk please respond to this email. No taxonomic knowledge is required. The only prerequisite is familiarity with the club’s walk route in a specific park.
