SUMMARY:Come join us for an online ID meeting this Monday\, starring Ascomycetes!
DESCRIPTION:Next Monday’s ID meeting will be happening online. \nSince there are fewer fungi to be found this time of year\, we’ll be diving deeper into families of fungi that a lot of people are interested in. It’s stick season\, so this Monday the spotlight is on ascomycetes\, hosted and moderated by the club’s own expert Ethan Crenson. To get you in the mood\, check out Ethan’s charming Instagram takeover from the other week. \nDid you know that ascos account for a whopping 75% of the fungal kingdom\, leaving fleshy fungi in the dust? They’re as large as morels\, as weird as Dead Man’s Fingers and as tiny as the tiniest Patellaria. Bring your most exciting or confounding asco observations and let’s learn about them together! We might well have time left over to look at other observations too. \nAs always\, we encourage you to use iNaturalist to share your observations – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City\n\nIf you’re not using iNaturalist\, try to have images on your computer that you can share. \nEither way\, it’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing as many details as possible. \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Diversity and Evolution of Chanterelles and Allies Rachel Swenie
DESCRIPTION:This talk will discuss the common edible chanterelle mushrooms and their relatives. Despite their appearance\, chanterelles are close relatives of a wide assortment of fungi with diverse forms that play many different roles in our ecosystems. How is it that such an oddball assortment of fungi are all closely related? How many species of chanterelles grow in North America? How can you tell species apart from each other\, and from lookalikes? We will cover these topics and more!\n  \n\nRachel Swenie is a mycologist with expertise in the macrofungi of eastern North America. She earned her PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Tennessee and is currently a Farlow Fellow at Harvard University. \nLecture Recording:\nThis lecture was recorded and is viewable to active members who are logged in. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a pop-up walk in Prospect Park\, Brooklyn\, Saturday January 27th! Please note that we are meeting at a different location than usual. For this walk we will be joined by members of the NYC Nature Drawing Club\, who will collect specimens for their meetup at Open Source Gallery. Unfortunately\, enrollment for that meetup is at capacity\, but stay tuned for future events by this lively club. \nBring lunch\, water and paper bags for collecting specimens. Bring your hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box\, and your keen senses. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you on Saturday! \nAre there any mushrooms when it’s cold outside?\nWe will not encounter the abundance of fleshy mushrooms that we normally do during the summer and fall. However\, there will be plenty of wood decomposers like jellies\, basidiomycete crusts\, ascomycetes\, and polypores\, in addition to some gilled fungi that prefer the cold weather. (Be sure to ask your walk leader about fungi that make their own antifreeze).  \nMembers are encouraged to lead pop-up walks!\nIf you are interested in leading or co-leading a pop-up walk please respond to this email. No taxonomic knowledge is required. The only prerequisite is familiarity with the club’s walk route in a specific park.

DESCRIPTION:Come learn how to make tempeh from tempeh expert Barry Schwartz. In an one-hour workshop\, Barry will guide you through the process of fermenting soybeans with Rhizopus oligosporus to produce a delicious\, nutrient-dense food that you can use in any of your dishes. He’ll provide all the materials you need\, including some of his special tempeh starter\, so that you can ferment your tempeh at home that night.\n\nRegister here\n\nBarry Schwartz has been operating his eponymous tempeh business\, Barry’s Tempeh\, in NYC for 15 years. His tempeh is far and away the best in the city\, and is always sold frozen\, never pasteurized. Recently\, Barry has had to shift his operations from direct-to-consumer sales to business customers\, so this is the closest you can get to trying his tempeh yourself! Read more about Barry here.Directions: This event is taking place at Bronx River House at 1490 Sheridan Blvd\, Bronx NY. A 10 min walk from the 2/5 – Freeman Stop or the 2/5 – 174th Street Stop. Also about a 7 min walk from the 6 train – Whitlock Ave. Parking is available along the Sheridan Blvd and nearby streets.
