SUMMARY:Come join us for an online ID meeting this Monday\, starring the Milky Caps!
DESCRIPTION:Next Monday’s ID meeting will be happening online. \nRather than using our usual format we’re going to experiment a little. Since there are fewer fungi to be found this time of year\, we’ll be diving deeper into genera that a lot of people are interested in. This Monday the spotlight is on the milky caps – Lactarius and Lactifluus\, hosted and moderated by the club’s own expert Bethany Beech. \nBring your most exciting or confounding milky cap observations and let’s learn about them together. We might well have time left over to look at other observations too. \nAs always\, we encourage you to use iNaturalist to share your observations – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City\n\nIf you’re not using iNaturalist\, try to have images on your computer that you can share. \nEither way\, it’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing details of cap\, underside and stem\, and to note the habitat \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Come join us for dinner at Buddha Bodai!
DESCRIPTION:The mushroom season is done\, and holidays are here\, so now would be a good time to revisit the old time favorites to get our mushroom fix. That is\, it is time to visit the trusty kosher Chinese vegetarian restaurant Buddha Bodai\, 5 Mott Street\, Chinatown\, Manhattan.\n\n\nCurrently we have two dinners planned there: next Thursday\, December 14th\, and Wednesday January 10th\, at 6:30pm on both days.\n\n\nThis place has been an long-time favorite for many members of our club. For those who have not tried it yet – welcome to the local mushroom eatery. Everything is vegetarian there\, most dishes are vegan\, but you will not be missing meat products while there at all.\n\n\nBased on the previous events there\, the costs per person should be somewhere around $30-33 (inflation!) including tips. The place does not serve alcohol\, but feel free to bring wine or beer if you want: since the place is certified kashrut\, they ask for the outside drinks to be kosher too. I will try to order a variety of dishes similar to the selections we tried in the past\, supply chain issues allowing\, of course\, and try a new dish or two. And please bring CASH as it is by far the easiest way to pay in the end.\n\n\nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar.

SUMMARY:Van Cortlandt Park East instead. Pop up walk: Jan. 13th\, Van Cortlandt Park\, Bronx...Bronx Forest walk POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately\, due to heavy rains and flooding in Bronx Forest earlier this week\, the walk with the Bronx River Alliance must be postponed to a later date. \nInstead\, join us for a pop-up walk in Van Cortlandt Park\, Bronx\, Saturday January 13th! \nBring lunch\, water and paper bags for collecting specimens. Bring your hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box if you have one\, and your keen senses. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you on Saturday! \nAre there any mushrooms when it’s cold outside?\nWe will not encounter the abundance of fleshy mushrooms that we normally do during the summer and fall. However\, there will be plenty of wood decomposers like jellies\, basidiomycete crusts\, ascomycetes\, and polypores\, in addition to some gilled fungi that prefer the cold weather. (Be sure to ask your walk leader about fungi that make their own antifreeze). \nMembers are encouraged to lead pop-up walks!\nIf you are interested in leading or co-leading a pop-up walk please respond to this email. No taxonomic knowledge is required. The only prerequisite is familiarity with the club’s walk route in a specific park.
