DESCRIPTION:This meeting will take place on Monday from 6.30 to 8.30 at Sigrid Jakob’s apartment in the South Slope/Greenwood neighborhood \nAttendees can of course arrive later and leave earlier. \nPlease bring any interesting specimens regardless of whether you have identified them or not\, and check out what others have found. \nIn person ID meetings are a great way of developing your hands-on identification skills and dipping your toes into microscopy! \nThere will be microscopes and books \nWe encourage you to use iNaturalist – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City.\nFungi Beyond New York City.\nSlime Molds of New York City.

DESCRIPTION:URBAN NATURE IN FALL/WINTER SEASONS\nTuesday\, December 19\, 2023\, exhibit opens at 4:30pm\, talks begin at 5pm Bay Ridge Library\, second floor Meeting Room\nExhibit and discussion about the vibrant life that cohabits our urban environment\, highlighting species of plants\, animals and fungi we are likely to see in the Northeast.\n\n\nWith nature at a tipping point this event serving teens-adults\, focuses on why these species are important to a healthy ecosystem\, an understanding that all species\, including ourselves\, are reliant on supporting biodiversity in their preservation\, and how we can protect their urban habitats. \nDonna Miskend is a multimedia artist\, writer\, and educator. Her current body of work focuses on botanical/natural science illustration. She is passionate about nature and supports environmental engagement efforts through her programs and collaborations. Her professional memberships include the American Society of Botanical Artists. She began her career as an Urban Park Ranger\, and is a public engagement associate for NYC Parks’ Wildlife Unit. She volunteers with NYC Audubon and other environmental groups\, and focuses her education efforts on raising resident’s awareness of wildlife and how to coexist with them. \nSigrid Jakob\, president of the NY Mycological Society\, board member of the Fungal Diversity Survey\, (FunDIS)\, member of the fungal conservation working group of the Canadian Institute of Ecology and Education\, and co-founder of a fungi-focused community science initiative for Green-Wood Cemetery. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a pop-up walk in the Wolfe’s Pond Park\, Staten Island\, December 23rd! \nBring lunch\, water and paper bags for collecting specimens. Bring your hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box if you have one\, and your keen senses. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you on Saturday! \nWhat happens now that scheduled walks are finished for the year?\nWe will have pop-up walks on most weekends until scheduled walks start again in July 2024. Pop-up walks are usually announced on Thursday mornings. Locations and dates are picked at short notice based on local conditions and walk leader availability. \nMembers are encouraged to lead pop-up walks!\nIf you are interested in leading or co-leading a pop-up walk please respond to this email. No taxonomic knowledge is required. The only prerequisite is familiarity with the club’s walk route in a specific park.
