DESCRIPTION:Come join us for an in-person ID meeting this Monday! \nAttendees can of course arrive later and leave earlier. \nPlease bring any interesting specimens regardless of whether you have identified them or not\, and check out what others have found. \nIn person ID meetings are a great way of developing your hands-on identification skills and dipping your toes into microscopy! \nCome share what you’ve found\, see what others have found or to ask more general questions about anything fungi-related.\nWe encourage you to use iNaturalist – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City.\nFungi Beyond New York City.\nSlime Molds of New York City.\n\nIt’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing details of cap\, underside and stem\, and to note the habitat. When possible\, make a spore print. \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions. \nGetting there: \n \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. DESCRIPTION:Come along on a pop-up walk in Cunningham Park\, Queens\, Sunday November 26th!\nBring lunch\, water and paper bags for collecting specimens. Bring your hand lens\, a knife\, maybe a tackle box\, and your keen senses. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app on your iOS or Android device to document the fungi you find. We will have pop-up walks on most weekends until scheduled walks start again in July 2024. Pop-up walks are usually announced on Thursday mornings. Locations and dates are picked at short notice based on local conditions and walk leader availability. \nMembers are encouraged to lead pop-up walks! \nIf you are interested in leading or co-leading a pop-up walk please respond to this email. No taxonomic knowledge is required. The only prerequisite is familiarity with the club’s walk route in a specific park.

SUMMARY:Torrey Botanical Society Presents: Lichens and Bryophytes of Green-Wood Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery is one of several publicly accessible green spaces along Long Island’s Harbor Hill moraine. The cemetery’s 478 glacially-deposited acres are filled with trees\, lawns\, gardens—and wilder patches—that attract arthropods and the birds that depend upon them. In Autumn and Winter\, the cemetery’s diverse habitats provide a rich opportunity for observing the smallest plants—the bryophytes—as well as their frequent neighbors\, the lichens. Amongst these miniature canopies live tiny animals that need their wee photosynthetic neighbors every bit as much as their larger relatives need the trees—and other angiosperm and gymnosperm plants—that populate the cemetery.\nPlease join us for a 2-3 hour walk during which we will observe several different habitats—including diverse types of grave markers—in and on which these lichen and bryophyte flora thrive. Wear sturdy walking shoes and be prepared for hilly terrain. If you have them\, bring binoculars and a hand lens. Jordan Hoffman (hoffmaj@newschool.edu) began studying lichens in 2016 during the start of his PhD and is now an assistant professor of biology at Eugene Lang College at The New School.
