DESCRIPTION:Next Monday’s week’s ID meeting will be happening online. \nCome share what you’ve found\, see what others have found or to ask more general questions about anything fungi-related.\nWe encourage you to use iNaturalist – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City.\nFungi Beyond New York City.\nSlime Molds of New York City.\n\nIf you’re not using iNaturalist\, try to have images on your computer that you can share. \nEither way\, it’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing details of cap\, underside and stem\, and to note the habitat. When possible\, make a spore print. \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

DESCRIPTION:Talk:\nMushrooms of the African Diaspor(e)a \nIn this ethnomycological expedition from the African continent to the Caribbean islands to the northeastern United States\, we’ll discuss traditional uses of and attitudes towards mushrooms\, from origin stories to recipes to fungal fruiting bodies as nourishing and sustainable food sources. \nPier 57 Community Classrooms\, Pier 57\, 25 11th Avenue\, New York\, NY 10011. The classrooms are at the back of the ground floor\, a few minutes’ walk from the entrance. Pier 57 is a couple of long blocks from the A\, C and E lines. The M14D bus also goes there. \nThis event is free and open to all. She has given mushroom talks or led walks for Telluride Mushroom Festival\, The Mycological Association of Washington DC\, the Central Texas Mycological Society\, and the Wisconsin Mycological Society\, among others. DESCRIPTION:This free walk is for all Black and brown folks interested in learning about mushrooms and the woodlands where they do their essential work. You don’t have to be a member to participate in this walk. \nThe walk is on Saturday\, November 18 at 10.30. We will meet at \nThe 242nd Street East entrance to Van Cortlandt Park \nThere are several ways to get there: \n\nTake the #4 train to Woodlawn subway station (last stop) and then take the Bx34 bus to the 242nd Street East entrance to the park\n\n\nTake the #5 train to 233rd Street station and then take the Bx31 bus to the 242nd Street East entrance\n\n\nTake the 9:42 Metro North train (Harlem Line) to Woodlawn train station and then walk for 14 minutes to the 242nd Street East entrance or take the Bx31 bus.\n\nThis is not an entrance we normally take\, so give yourself plenty of time to plan your travel! \nIt’s always good to check the MTA service alerts to make sure transit is running on time. \n\nMaria Pinto is a Boston-area writer\, mycophile\, and educator. DESCRIPTION:Thanks to all who attended our fantastic Dia de los Muertos / Halloween Fungal Horror discussion of Mexican Gothic! In honor of Native American Heritage month\, our November reading will spotlight indigenous mycology.  We will read BRAIDING SWEETGRASS by Robin Wall Kimmerer\, focusing on the chaga-centric chapter 30\, Shkitagen: People of the Seventh Fire (though reading the book in its entirety is encouraged). Bring your hand lens\, a knife\, maybe a tackle box\, and your keen senses. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app to document the fungi you find.
