SUMMARY:Online ID Meeting Monday August 21\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our online ID meeting on Monday\, August 21st. Come share what you’ve found\, see what others have found or to ask more general questions about anything fungi-related. \nI encourage you to use iNaturalist – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \nFungi of New York City \nFungi Beyond New York City \nIf you’re not using iNaturalist\, try to have images on your computer that you can share. \nEither way\, it’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing details of cap\, underside and stem\, and to note the habitat. When possible\, make a spore print. \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions. \nThis link will remain the same until February 2024. \nWe look forward to seeing you on Monday! \nThe next ID meeting\, August 28\, will be in person.

SUMMARY:Greenbrook Sanctuary Pop-Up Fungus Survey
DESCRIPTION:This walk will be a bit different from our usual NYC Park walks. The Greenbrook Sanctuary prohibits the removal of material from their property. This optimizes the survey baseline: the environs are not foraged thus providing a more natural venue for surveying the fungal biome. \nHowever\, NYMS in cooperation with the Palisades Nature Association (Greenbrook Sanctuary) has conducted many surveys of the Sanctuary with their permission to pick fungi. \nWe will require that all collections be made according to a protocol that will ensure documentation: in situ photos\, carefully excavated specimens\, voucher slip and field notes included in the specimen bag. \nAll participants will return their collections to the Nature Center where all collections will be accessioned\, photographed and documented for the survey. These collections will be dried and a portion of them will be submitted for DNA analysis. \nIf you haven’t ever participated in such an foray\, your grasp of mycological citizen science will be well enhanced by this experience. \nFrom our knowledge of Greenbrook we know that the best time for a survey is upon us. The steady but moderate rain we have had promises a fulsome survey. In August 2008 in these circumstances we brought in 325 collections! \nPlease consider volunteering for this project. \nRequirements: \n\niPhone or camera (with downloadable capacity)\nPocket knife\nCollection bag or basket\n3 or 4 hours\nThe usual dress and gear for a typical mushroom walk\n\nWe’ll provide: \n\nCollection bags\nVoucher slips\n\nGetting there\nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar.
