SUMMARY:Learn how to do fungal DNA sequencing February 22nd in Brooklyn!
DESCRIPTION:NYMS member Sally Kong is running yet another one of our ever popular DNA barcoding workshops where participants will learn how to extract fungal DNA\, amplify it\, perform gel electrophoresis and learn about how to interpret a sequence. \nThe workshop will take place on Sunday February 22nd 2pm to 5pm at in Red Hook\, Brooklyn. \nCost is $10 to cover pipette tips\, tubes\, reagents and Sanger sequencing. \nThis is a hands-on workshop so attendance is very limited. No prior knowledge is required but we hope that attendees will graduate to doing their own extractions and amplifications with the club’s lab. \nIf you are interested please email president@newyorkmyc.org with a short description of why you are interested in doing this workshop. \nAbout Sally Kong\nSally is a software engineer\, artist\, and hobby biologist based in Brooklyn\, New York. For the past six years she’s built software for feature animation and games. Outside of work\, she spends most of her time at the community biology lab Genspace and is currently the lead of the community project Microbial Reef\, exploring the impact of oyster reefs on microbial communities and the biogeochemical cycling in local waterways. Recently\, in collaboration with NYMS she led the Roots of Renewal internship program teaching science\, art\, and sustainability practices to AAPI youth in Sunset Park through the lens of mycelium.
