SUMMARY:Learn how to do fungal DNA sequencing October 13!
DESCRIPTION:NYMS member Sally Kong is running another one of our ever popular DNA barcoding workshops where participants will learn how to extract fungal DNA\, amplify it\, perform gel electrophoresis and learn about how to interpret a sequence. \nSally is a software engineer\, artist\, and hobby biologist based in Brooklyn\, New York. For the past six years she’s built software for feature animation and games. Outside of work\, she spends most of her time at the community biology lab Genspace and is currently the lead of the community project Microbial Reef\, exploring the impact of oyster reefs on microbial communities and the biogeochemical cycling in local waterways. \nRecently\, in collaboration with NYMS she led the Roots of Renewal internship program teaching science\, art\, and sustainability practices to AAPI youth in Sunset Park through the lens of mycelium. \nShe’s excited to welcome other members to her home for the barcoding workshop! \nThe 3 hour workshop will take place on Sunday October 13 at 3pm in Red Hook Brooklyn. \nCost is $10 to cover pipette tips\, tubes\, reagents and Sanger sequencing. \nThis is a hands-on workshops so attendance is very limited. No prior knowledge is required. \nIf you are interested please email president@newyorkmyc.org with a short description of why you are interested in doing this workshop.

SUMMARY:COMA 2024 Clark Rogerson Foray
DESCRIPTION:For 2024\, we will be at the Berkshire Hills Eisenberg Camp\, an accessible 460-acre facility in Copake\, NY. The secluded site features a private lake and comfortable (“motel-style”) accommodations. Foraging on campus and in nearby parks is reliably outstanding. We usually identify and record close to 400 species and will have a team of mycologists and expert identifiers on hand throughout the event. \nThe Ursula Hoffmann scholarship is intended to support the recipient’s attendance at COMA’s annual Clark Rogerson Foray. \nRegister Here\nOur roster of invited mycologists includes: \n\nDr. Roz Lowen\, ascomycete expert\, and professor of mycology\nBill Yule\, Connecticut River naturalist\, and bolete expert\nJohn Plischke III\, author of Good Mushroom\, Bad Mushroom\nRick Van de Poll\, nationally recognized mycologist and instructor.\nDianna Smith\, past president of NEMF and founder of PVMA\n\nFeaturing Julie O’Grady\, Chief Mycophagy Chef. \nOvernight Accommodations\nThe 4-day fee includes 3 nights’ lodging and 8 meals\, from dinner on Friday to breakfast on Monday. (Please bring your lunch on Friday.) All rooms will be double-occupancy unless you elect to pay for the entire room yourself*. If you do not have a roommate chosen\, we will select one for you. \n\nMushroom Walks\nHunt mushrooms to your heart’s content\, both right on the property at nearby state parks. Learn in the field from expert mycologists. At the end of the Foray\, the mycologists will give “table talks\,” pointing out the weekend’s most interesting and exciting finds. \nEducational Programs\nAfternoon and evening programs will expand your fungal knowledge. Previous programs have covered a wide variety of topics. \nLive Auction\nDonate anything mushroom or outdoor-related\, including books\, magazines\, posters\, artwork\, houseware\, clothing\, and games. Keep your eyes peeled on your next stop at a yard sale. Self-made artwork\, t-shirts\, jewelry\, crafts\, jams\, jellies\, or dried mushrooms also make for sought-after prizes. \nScholarships\nWe strongly encourage members to apply for funding through COMA’s Scholarship Programs.
