SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, Alley Pond Park\, Queens\, Sunday\, March 22nd
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Alley Pond Park\, Queens this Sunday\, March 22nd. \nWe have only visited Alley Pond Park in March on one previous occasion (2018). What we find in the cool months is mostly ascomycetes\, crusts\, and poroid fungi. With the recent rains it will be interesting to see what we encounter on this walk. In our 2025 research report\, Sigrid Jakob evaluated the fruiting window for three major groups of fleshy mushrooms—Boletes\, Amanita\, and Russula. The earliest date of first fruiting of each of these types of mushroom (May 21st Boletes\, May 21st Amanita\, May 18th Russula) is still several weeks away. First fruiting dates seem to be relatively stable. It is the date of last fruiting which seems to fluctuate year to year. \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk or shift it to another day. Please monitor your email in case we do. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the walk!
