In case you missed the opening event for the exhibition\, please join us for our first event on Saturday\, 4/12\, 2-4pm. Free with RSVP and museum admission. \nWe will likely have our weekend club walk on 4/12 nearby the museum\, so stay tuned and check your 4/10 e-blast for location details. SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, Cunningham Park\, Queens\, Sunday\, April 13th
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Cunningham Park\, Queens this Sunday\, April 13th. \nThe spring can be cruel for mycophiles. We watch the flowers bloom and the trees leaf out\, knowing that the mushrooms will be along\, but not just yet. However\, Cunningham Park (and nearby Alley Pond Park) are host to an early season ascomycete: the “false morel” Gyromitra korfii. The genus Gyromitra has recently undergone a revision so the species in question now goes by the name Maublancomyces korfii. The name doesn’t really roll off the tongue. Bragging rights and eternal gratitude to anyone who finds this mushroom on Sunday. \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. The NYMS is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk. Please monitor your email in case we do. The rain we expect to see on Saturday will likely be just ending as our walk begins on Sunday. Fingers crossed. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find.
