SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, Wolfe's Pond Park\, Staten Island\, Sunday\, March 23rd
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Wolfe’s Pond Park\, Staten Island this Sunday\, March 23rd. \nAs the spring weather gradually warms us\, you might expect to see mushrooms appearing alongside the first spring flowers. Not so. Spring is\, for the most part\, a period of inactivity for the fleshy fungi. The season does bring morels (if we’re lucky)\, but not until late April or early May. What we are likely to see on this walk are the winter holdovers: ascos\, crusts\, polypores\, etc. The fact is\, we have never visited Wolfe’s Pond in March. So this walk is a bit of an experiment.  \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. The NYMS is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk. Please monitor your email in case we do.  Dress for the weather – it should be quite pleasant. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find.
