SUMMARY:A walk with Maria Pinto
DESCRIPTION:This free walk is for all Black and brown folks interested in learning about mushrooms and the woodlands where they do their essential work. You don’t have to be a member to participate in this walk. \nThe walk is on Saturday\, November 18 at 10.30. We will meet at \nThe 242nd Street East entrance to Van Cortlandt Park \nThere are several ways to get there: \n\nTake the #4 train to Woodlawn subway station (last stop) and then take the Bx34 bus to the 242nd Street East entrance to the park\n\n\nTake the #5 train to 233rd Street station and then take the Bx31 bus to the 242nd Street East entrance\n\n\nTake the 9:42 Metro North train (Harlem Line) to Woodlawn train station and then walk for 14 minutes to the 242nd Street East entrance or take the Bx31 bus.\n\nThis is not an entrance we normally take\, so give yourself plenty of time to plan your travel! \nIt’s always good to check the MTA service alerts to make sure transit is running on time. \n\nMaria Pinto is a Boston-area writer\, mycophile\, and educator. She teaches for the literary nonprofit GrubStreet and has been awarded fellowships by the Vermont Studio Center\, the Writers’ Room of Boston\, The Mastheads\, and MASS MoCA. She has given mushroom talks or led walks for Telluride Mushroom Festival\, The Mycological Association of Washington DC\, the Central Texas Mycological Society\, and the Wisconsin Mycological Society\, among others. She also gave a great lecture at Fungus Festival last year! She’s currently at work on a book of nonfiction inspired by mushrooms for the University of North Carolina Press. Follow her on Instagram!

DESCRIPTION:Note the earlier-than-usual start time! \nCome join us for a pop-up walk in Prospect Park\, in Brooklyn tomorrow\, Sunday November 19th! \nYes\, we realize it’s short notice\, but if you can make it\, huzzah. \nBring lunch\, water and paper bags for collecting specimens. Bring your hand lens\, a knife\, maybe a tackle box\, and your keen senses. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \n  \nThe walk\nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n \nWe look forward to seeing you this Sunday! \nWhat happens now that scheduled walks are finished for the year? \nWalks are not over! We will have pop-up walks on most weekends until scheduled walks start again in July 2024. Pop-up walks are usually announced on Thursday mornings. Locations and dates are picked at short notice based on local conditions and walk leader availability. \nMembers are encouraged to lead pop-up walks! \nIf you are interested in leading a pop-up walk please respond to this email. No taxonomic knowledge is required. The only prerequisite is familiarity with the club’s walk route in a specific park.
