DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Wawayanda State Park\, Passaic Co.\, NJ – Saturday\, September 12th \nEntomopathogenic fungi which infect insects can frequently be found on the undersides of Rhododendron leaves along forest trails. There are many Rhododendrons in Wawayanda. On last year’s Wawayanda walk we found a Gibellula sp.\, a genus that infects spiders\, consuming them from the inside and causing them to leave their webs and die in exposed locations allowing the fungus to spread its spores. \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. SUMMARY:2026 Catskills Weekend at Soyuzivka Village Oct. 2-4th
DESCRIPTION:We are returning to Soyuzivka (Soy-ya-`zyou-ka) in Kerhonkson\, NY for our annual Catskill Weekend. Soyuzivka is a Ukrainian Village Resort in the heart of the Shawangunks west of New Paltz. \nOur Society has spent autumns hunting mushrooms in this area for over 20 years. Hope runs high that this autumn will be as productive as it has been in years past. \nThe weekend begins with a Friday night buffet supper at the Main House Dining Room where all meals will be served. \nWe have reserved the Kiev Lodge\, a beautiful house that sleeps 18-20 people in single & double rooms. The house features a spacious living room and a balcony offering a magnificent view of the Catskills to the north. Should we exceed that number we’ve also reserved Halych Lodge to handle overflow. \nRooms in the Sich Dormitory provide a more economical housing option. These registrants must bring their own bedding and bathroom towels. \nThere are a number of campsites in the area. \nAnd we will offer a meal plan for campers and commuters. \nSaturday starts with breakfast\, followed by a foray in nearby forests. We’ll split up into two or three groups. After a boxed lunch\, we’ll do more foraging in the area. We’ll have a mycology session in the late afternoon followed by Saturday night dinner. Sunday we’ll have a breakfast before breaking for our return trip to New York with stops along the way for mushroom hunts in the Shawangunks. \nHere are the various accommodation offerings: \n\n\n \n\n\nRoom Type\nTotal Cost\n\n\n\n\nSingle room Fri & Sat with 5 meals\n$510.00\n\n\nDouble Occupancy per person with 5 meals\n$340.00\n\n\nDorm accommodation per person 5 meals\n$265.00\n\n\nCommuter per person with 5 meals\n$175.00\n\n\n\n\nTo reserve your spot\, make a ticket selection (below) and put down the $100.00 deposit. DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Thursday\, October 15\, 2026\, 7-9PM ET for a virtual discussion of the new book Tiny Gardens Everywhere by Kate Brown\, an avid gardener\, distinguished professor in the history of science at MIT and author of four previous prize-winning books\, including Manual for Survival. \nTiny Gardens Everywhere traces three centuries of unlikely urban green spaces—from Paris Commune plots to Soviet allotments and migrant-tended orchards—where ordinary people\, facing upheaval and scarcity\, turned scraps of land into thriving sources of food\, community\, and quiet resistance. \nThis title is an expansion of the Myco Book Club’s thematic — while fungi are not explicitly the central character of this book\, they are central participants and co-drivers in this social movement and larger ecological vision. \nHailed by Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing — one of our Myco Book Club heroes (and the author of The Mushroom at the End of the World) — she praises Tiny Gardens for “[showing] us the path between the plot and the planet. SUMMARY:Joint NYMS/COMA Picnic.  Blue Mountain Reservation\, Peekskill\, NY - Saturday\, October 24th
DESCRIPTION:The New York Mycological Society along with COMA (Connecticut-Westchester Mycological Association) are having our annual joint potluck picnic. It will take place at Blue Mountain Reservation\, Peekskill\, New York on Saturday\, October 24th. \nPlease bring plenty of good food and drink (mushroom dishes appreciated\, of course) to share with everyone. After the picnic there will be a walk in an adjacent park.  \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk or shift it to another day. Please monitor your email in case we do. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn on Halloween and wander among the memorials to New York’s past residents including Leonard Bernstein\, Boss Tweed\, Charles Ebbets\, Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Louis Comfort Tiffany\, and Horace Greeley. Green-Wood is a 478 acre cemetery and arboretum\, that hosts some unusual fungi which we might encounter if the conditions are favorable. If conditions are not favorable there are always lichens on the trees and gravestones.  \nThis is a non-collecting walk\, so bring only a hand lens. No foraging in the cemetery. The club is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk. DESCRIPTION:Joint walk with Long Island Mycological Club (LIMC) at Edgewood Oak Brush Plains Preserve\, Deer Park\, NY – Saturday\, November 14th. \nEdgewood Oak Brush Plains Preserve features a rare pitch pine/scrub oak barrens characterized by dense shrub thickets. This is an unusual barrens habitat which occurs in only three places on Long Island. It is considered a globally rare habitat. The barrens are interspersed with stands of bigtooth aspen and there are grasslands on the site as well. \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk or shift it to another day.
